How do I get incoming links - a beginners guide...

Incoming links (inbound links) are hard word to get. Getting quality incoming links is even harder. That’s why they are so important in getting you better search engine results positions (SERPS).

So where do you start? Well, here’s my top 5 tips:

  1. Quality, not quantity - a small number of high quality links will always be better than hundreds of poor links.
  2. Don’t exchange links - they are a waste of time and Google will ignore them. It’s only incoming, one-way links that are important.
  3. Don’t buy links - a few purchased links (effectively advertising on other sites) won’t harm you, but too many paid links on link farms could get you in hot water with Google.
  4. Keep it relevant - if the website you’re getting a link off is in a completely different industry or not relevant to yours, chances are Google will ignore it altogether.
  5. Keep it exclusive - if the site has dozens of links to other sites as well as yours, the effect will be so diluted that it really isn’t worth it. It’s not going to harm you, but it probably won’t give you the benefit that you would hope for. Instead, aim to get exclusive links with very few (only yours if possible!) links to other sites.

Clearly, link building doesn’t end with the five tips above, and to do it well requires lots of hard work.
