Sync Error 0x85020006 over USB

The 0x85020006 Sync Error - “Cannot connect with current connection settings.”

The error is so vague it makes it impossible to work out. It instructs you to Click Start, Settings, then Connections… but where from there? Who knows?!

With our phones we could sync fine when using the wireless, gprs or bluetooth - it was just the USB that was giving us problems.

0x85020006 Sync Error Fix

This fix is for Windows Vista Mobile Device Center (you might need another fix for other versions of Windows and ActiveSync).

  1. Connect your phone as you normally would (follow the wizards to do this).
  2. The phone will probably try to sync, but will always fail.
  3. Open the Windows Mobile Device Center and hover over ‘Mobile Device Settings’ (see fig 1.)
  4. Click ‘Connection Settings’ and you should see a pop up (see fig 2.)
  5. Change the drop down box ‘This computer is connected to:’ to ‘The Internet’
  6. Click Ok and click on the green sync icon to try to sync your device.

Yes - it worked!

I have problems with my HP ipaq classic handheld. I normally sync wirelessly but if I join my PDA to my home network when I return to work it doesn't sync properly. I'm sure its to do with connecting to work or internet etc but sometimes it works and sometimes not. Very frustrating.

Thanks for this fix.
